Mountain Pine Beetles

Also known by its scientific name, Dendroctonus ponderosae, the mountain pine beetle is one of the most destructive, tree-killing insects in Oregon. From 1976 to 1985, these beetles caused the deaths of an average of 1 million acres of pine trees each year. These insects attack the trunk of the tree, leaving random "pitch tubes" that are half an inch to an inch in diameter. To prevent them from spreading to other trees, the infested pines need to be dealt with before the middle of June.

Western Gall Rust

This fungal disease is caused by a rust fungus called Endocronartium harknessii. It normally affects lodgepole pines and ponderosa pines in Central Oregon. Western gall rust looks like swollen growths and can be found on tree branches and stems. These growths vary in size and shape, from small to large and round to pear-shaped.
